Prase is
a dull leek-green colored micro-crystalline variety
of Quartz. It is named from the Greek word prasios meaning leek,
referring to its leek-green color. A leek is a biennial garden herb of the lily family grown for its mildly pungent succulent green
leaves. The green coloration
is from Actinolite, Chlorite
or Hedenbergite
inclusions
depending on locality.
Originally, the varietal name "prase" was
applied to a leek-green colored micro-crystallin
Quartz that was colored green by Hedenbergite inclusions.
The most notable occurance of this Prase Quartz is on
the Serifos Island of Greece. Over time the term Prase
has also been applied to other materials having a similar
leek green color but not only micro-crysallin Quartz
and without regard to what causes the color. These days
the term Prase no longer has any mineralogical specification;
it has become a general term to describe color and can't
even be called a varietal name.
