The
name Grandite was created by combining the "gr" from grossular and the "and" from andradite;
two varieties of Garnet.
Grandite is a synonym for the Andradite-Grossular Series
which is a series between Andradite and Grossular varieties
of Garnet.
Originally
Grandite was a species name for an intermediate compositional range between
Grossular and Andradite; but since the adoption of the 50% rule (dominant-constituent
rule) it has
come to be a generic name for the series used when the exact
percentages of aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) aren't known, and so the exact species can't be
determined.
